History of Farming in the Capistrano Valley Exhibit
February 1 through June 30, 2018
The Historical Society is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Arley Leck House with an exhibit chronicling the evolution of farming in the Capistrano Valley. The exhibit will be on display in the Leck House and includes historic photographs, orange crate labels and memorabilia such as clothing and lifestyle items from the early 1900s. Members of the public are invited to attend this free event.
March Bi-Annual Meeting

Along with having our annual election of Board members, we are happy to announce that our Guest Speaker for this meeting will be Alana Jolley who will share with us some of her extensive knowledge on genealogy and family histories. She is currently a professor of anthropology at Saddleback College and has written and published a number of ethnographies as well as two children’s anthropology books. Please join us at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center at 7 pm.
San Juan Capistrano Historical Society Barbecue at the 60th Annual Swallow’s Day Parade Mercado

Visit the Historical Society booth at the Swallows’ Day Parade Mercado and enjoy beverages and delicious tri-tip barbecue sandwiches. Proceeds from sales benefit ongoing preservation projects.
March and November – Bi-Annual Meetings
General meetings are held in March and November and are open to all guests and members. Special guest speakers entertain audiences as they share stories of historic interest relating to the area. A report on the Society’s yearly activities is presented, and the annual election of Board members is also part of the March meeting. Meetings are usually held at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center on Del Avion from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, and there is no cost to attend.
March – Barbecue at the Swallows’ Day Parade Mercado
Find the Historical Society booth at the Swallows’ Day Parade Mercado for some tasty tri-tip barbecue sandwiches and beverages to wash them down. The booth is located on the El Camino Real parking lot near the Ortega Highway entrance from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
June – Annual Mixer
Every June, the Society hosts a mixer for its members and guests. The mixer is held on the beautiful O’Neill Museum grounds. Generous amounts of food and beverages are served. Attendees are also invited to take part in a silent auction and raffle for a chance to enjoy exceptional prizes.
September – The Annual Heritage Barbecue
The annual Heritage Barbecue is another wonderful opportunity to enjoy the Historical Society grounds. Their famous savory tri-tip dinner is served with sides of beans, salad, desert, and soft drinks. Reservations are required to help ensure food for all.
October – Famous Historic Ghosts & Legends Tour
Get in the spirit of Halloween by joining the Historical Society Walking Tour Guides on a spooky adventure along Los Rios Street, the oldest residential neighborhood in California. Be prepared for creepy tales of big black dogs, strange monks who have lost their heads, ghostly tales about a lady in white and other goings on.
Tours start at the O’Neill Museum on Los Rios Street. Reservations are required as tours often sell out and tickets are not available at the door. Refreshments are available for purchase.
December Open House
The Historical Society hosts an open house as part of the City of San Juan Capistrano’s Tree Lighting event. Mrs. Clause delights all with a special Story Time while cookies and hot chocolate are served to warm visitors under twinkling holiday lights.
